FISHING: The fishing on this trip is not guided, as we are not licensed guides in the state of Michigan. We have plenty of experience fishing the Fly Fishing Only Section of the Pere Marquette and we'll hang out and fish in small groups. We'll be able to direct you to different areas of the river and give you tips on tactics and gear. We selected this weekend to fish because these dates generally fall within the peak of King Salmon run on the Pere Marquette. The steelhead will not be in great numbers, but we always catch a couple this time of year along with a stray coho here and there. King Salmon on the Pere Marquette average 15-17lbs.
The Pere Marquette River can vary greatly in it's flows for the months of September & October based on rainfall. This does require you to be familiar with multiple tactics for salmon and steelhead fishing. When the flows are in the 300-600cfs range, typical swinging and dead drifting tactics work well. When the flows are above 600cfs, chuck and duck methods can br necessary to get your fly offering down into the deep fast runs where the salmon hold. And, it's never a waste of time to swing streamers for fresh salmon and steelhead on the Pere Marquette. If you hit a King Salmon on the swing...you will get the shaking of a life time!
The Pere Marquette is an excellent brown trout fishery. When the salmon and steelhead are in the river, the brown trout can be found integrated among the schools of salmon and behind the redds munching eggs. 18-20" brown trout are very common on the Pere Marquette and are just as fun to target as the salmon and steelhead.
**All of the fishing on the Pere Marquette for this trip will require wading in moderate flows unless you bring your own boat or rent/charter a boat. All fishing is at your own risk.
**You will be responsible for getting your own Michigan Fishing License
